Republican Party in decline since 2002

Filed under: National Politics - Cynthia @ 3:42 pm

Is anyone surprised? I’m also unhappy with the Democratic Party but there are no viable alternatives. It would be nice if this trend meant that a shift to a third party is forthcoming.

Public allegiance to the Republican Party has plunged since the second year of George W. Bush’s presidency, as attitudes have edged away from some of the conservative values that fueled GOP political dominance for more than a decade.

I’ve always wondered how the Republican Party became synonymous with conservative Christian values. I was taught that Christian values included sharing with the community. It appears those who believe in Christianity was/is/were/are confused about their own religion. With all of the scandals and what the Republicans stood for in the first place, one has to wonder how anyone could have ever mis-identified the Republican Party with conservative values.

The survey found a "dramatic shift" in political party identification since 2002, when Republicans and Democrats were at rough parity. Now, half of those surveyed identified with or leaned toward Democrats, while only 35% aligned with Republicans.

  1. Interesting news but what the Democrats need is something of a new frontier, a great society, or perhaps a new deal. Right now they don’t have anything except being anti-Bush.

  3. I am with you that we are due for a third party that will shake things up a bit and get the dominant parties out of complacency.

As far as the Republican Party being “synonymous” with Conservative Christian values, I don’t buy into that either because that simply isn’t what I see from day to day from Republicans. It could be said that Republicans represent my values as a Christian more closely than the Democrats in their official platform, but they are far from ideal, which is why I vote my conscience and not the party line.
